Digital-age problem solving combines three key skills and concepts essential to understanding and solving problems in the information age: data literacy, design thinking, and computational thinking. Data literacy is the ability to analyze, interpret, and tell stories using complex sets of data. Design thinking is the ability to understand problems and develop creative solutions. Computational thinking is the process of expressing solutions so that humans and computers can understand them.
The data can be viewed from the website via a chart, map, or table. The data can also be downloaded to be manipulated in your owning graphing platform. Within each indicator and way of representing the data, you can drill down by Perspective (gender), Countries, Time, and ways to compare variables.
You can use the data to ask questions like:
- how do populations vary across countries or over time?
- how does the working age population vary across countries or over time or by gender?
Bring the world’s population to your classroom through demography data!
There are a large number of floats throughout the world ocean, constantly collecting information about the ocean and sending it back to scientists on land. The Biogeochemical-Argo project is working to “develop[e] a global network of biogeochemical sensors.”
They are constantly out there, meaning there is a constant source of data about different areas in the ocean.
You can use these data to ask questions like:
- how do properties (e.g., water temperature, salinity, dissolved oxygen) in the ocean vary across time?
- how do properties in the ocean vary across space?
- how do properties in the ocean vary with depth between the surface to 2,000 meters?
- how does the ocean in one region vary over time?

You can access the data through the online mapping platform, or via accessing the database.
